A Raining Afternoon

What do you think if I use this composition?

This scenic place is at the corner of Cold Spring Harbor State Park. The lovely swan couple was there the whole morning.

First Day of Autumn

Oil on Paper 6x8 In

The first day of autumn is still warm, but overcast. Everything looks gray. I went to Oyster Bay again and looked around, but I couldn't decide what to paint. Finally, I chose this gazebo because there was a family of swans swimming by.

I don't like this painting. It's too gray.

The Fix

My super awesome advisor thinks the hills behind the gazebo looked like a tsunami. I fixed it by adding a touch of green and I sharpened the edges a little. I also down-toned the shadows in the foreground. There is a small white boat in front of the big ship. Can you see it? I made it more clear, but I don't like it and want to undo it. What do you think?

That's the reason I don't like to fix paintings-the more I do the worse it gets. Next time I'll just listen to my super awesome advisor but I won't do what she says. Now I like the unfixed version more. :(

Summer's End -- Oyster Bay, The Light Ship

Oil on Paper 11x14 in

The last day of summer is warm and pleasant. The grass is changing color. I finished this painting in 2 hours and twenty minutes. It was a very pleasant experience.

My great, super awesome advisor wants me to fix this painting. Where will I fix it? Please check my next post to find out!

Why this painting looks dirty to me? I only want to show the shadow of those branches.

Maybe I should show more of the house.

Bermuda

The Clock Tower at Naval Dockyard. There were 2 towers there, but the position I sat in could only see one. It's not because I was lazy :) The spot I sat was under a shade.

I was greedy and tried to finish 2 paintings in an hour and a half. The paintings were done on pastel color papers, so I already had the middle tone. I finished this painting first, then turned 180 degree around and finished the painting on the top.

St. Thomas

San Juan

I started to like these oil sticks. The colors can be applied easily just by using it like a brush. I modulated color directly on the painting. The down side is the stick was too big for a small area. It feels like using size 12 brush on a 9x12 in canvas. It was hard to put down the details. I some times used q-tips or even picked small sticks from the ground to get the color from the stick and apply it to the painting.

At Sea

I bought Shiva Artist's Paintstik just for the cruise trip. I did these two sketches for practice.
This is my first time using Paintstik.

Two drawings

These were plein air drawings done on a cruise ship at Brooklyn Cruise Port. The luggage with my painting tools was delivered after the ship sailed. I did two quick drawings with manga pens.

These two paintings were done from same reference picture but at difference time. The top one was done today(10/3/10), the bottom one was done a year and half ago. I believe my watercolor skill has been dramatically improved.
